Getting started
Read the guideHow do I register on Dentra?
All you need is your email: you receive a link and a code, and either one gets you in. When you enter Dentra Core a window asks for your first name, last name, the name of your business and your country, and right after that your details for invoicing: company name, VAT number or, outside Italy, the tax number used in your country, and address. In Dentra Viewer and Oralsnap Model you can start working right away: we ask for those details when you want to take your work with you, that is create a link or download a model. Later, if you haven't placed any orders yet, we ask how you work: practice, laboratory or dental technician. There is no approval to wait for. For now each company has one Dentra account: if yours is already signed up, sign in with that one.
Do I have to wait for my account to be approved?
No. There is no manual check: as soon as you confirm your email you can use Dentra. In Dentra Core, after your details and your invoicing details, you view the price list and prepare an order. We only ask for the direct debit authorisation when you send your first order or activate a paid plan.
What happens after I sign up?
You're in straight away, usually on “Welcome to Dentra”, the start page of Dentra Core: there we ask who you are and your business details, then you prepare your first order and, if it's offered to you, book a short welcome video call with our team. To send the order you also need SEPA direct debit: you set it up once, in a few minutes, and you only pay the end-of-month invoice.
Who can use Dentra?
Dental practices, dental laboratories and dental technicians. Dentra works with professional businesses: that's why we ask for your business details for invoicing, when you enter Dentra Core or when you take your work with you from Dentra Viewer and Oralsnap Model. If you're a student, in that same window you can ask for a student account. For now Dentra Core only takes orders from practices and labs in Europe; you can use Dentra Viewer and Oralsnap Model from any country, on the free version.
There are several of us in my company: can each of us have an account?
Not for now: each company has one Dentra account, which we recognise by its VAT number or tax number, and colleagues use that one. If you save the number of a company that already has an account, your details are saved and you can use Dentra Viewer and Oralsnap Model, but to order with Dentra Core you need to sign in with the company's account, or write to us at [email protected]. If we opened that account for you, because you already worked with us before signing up, enter your VAT number: the request to link it starts on its own. Until we confirm it's you, you can't order from this account; as soon as we confirm, you find your past orders and invoices and we let you know by email.
Why do you ask for my billing details if I only use the free systems?
Because Dentra is a business service and we need to know who we work with. You can use Dentra Viewer and Oralsnap Model without them: we ask when you want to take your work with you, that is create a link or download a model. Dentra Core, on the other hand, asks for them when you enter, because that's where you order. You enter them only once and they apply to all systems. Your IBAN, on the other hand, we don't ask for until you order or activate a paid plan.
Can I try Dentra without an account?
Yes. Without an account you can fill in an order (you sign up at the end, to send it), open 3D models with Dentra Viewer and build a model with Oralsnap Model. To download a model from Oralsnap Model, or to send a link with Dentra Viewer, you need the free account and your business details.
Which systems can I use and how much do they cost?
Signing up is free. Dentra Core is digital design, for now only for practices and labs in Europe: there is no subscription, you only pay for orders. Dentra Viewer opens and shares 3D models: it's free with some limits, and the PRO version costs €10 per month. Oralsnap Model prepares models for printing: it's free with logos engraved on the base, and without logos with an Oralsnap plan. They're all already on your account, with nothing to activate: you choose the paid plans from Subscriptions in the menu.
Which languages is Dentra available in?
Italian, English, German, Estonian, Polish and Spanish, both the website and the app. On the website you change it from the language selector; in the app from the Commands menu, the three-dots button at the bottom of the systems column, or from your account. The language you choose stays on your account and also applies to emails.
Which countries do you work in?
For now Dentra Core only takes orders from practices and labs in Europe, in the countries where the SEPA direct debit can be signed: the whole European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Monaco, San Marino, Andorra and Vatican City. Orders are paid by end-of-month direct debit, which can't be set up anywhere else. From any other country you can sign up and use Dentra Viewer and Oralsnap Model on the free version.
Who physically produces the work?
Dentra doesn't produce: Dentra Core does the digital design and delivers the file ready for production. Milling, printing, ceramic layering and delivery to the patient are usually done by you or your laboratory. On request you can also order the finished work, still from Dentra Core, from CAM Dental Technicians, our partner lab: it produces it, ships it to you and invoices you directly.
Orders and design
Read the guideHow do I place an order?
From your Dentra area open New order and follow the steps: choose the type of work, mark the teeth on the chart, upload the scans and fill in the prescription. If you don't have the prescription details to hand you can skip it: the work starts anyway and you complete it later. Only in orders with production is the prescription needed straight away. In the summary you see the price and delivery date before confirming. With your first order we also ask for the SEPA direct debit authorisation, just once.
Do you offer CAD design services?
Yes, that's what Dentra Core does: you upload the scans and our team designs the work digitally. We design the work in the price list: crowns and bridges, veneers, Toronto with a custom internal bar, dentures, surgical guides and the rest.
Can you also produce the work?
Dentra doesn't produce, but on request you can order the finished work from CAM Dental Technicians, our partner lab, directly from Dentra Core: with our design or with a design of your own. The lab ships the work to you or gets it ready for pickup, together with its declaration of conformity, and sends you its own invoice for production and shipping directly. To have it switched on, write to [email protected]: the Dentra team turns it on for your account, and from then on you find the steps in the guide. Outside Italy the lab decides case by case.
What work can I order?
Crowns and bridges, veneers, Toronto, surgical guide, full and partial dentures, MAD (mandibular advancement device), occlusal splint, custom tray, study model and model design. The up-to-date list with prices is in the price list.
Do I have to choose the material in the order?
No. The design price is the same for all materials of the same type of work, and the file is ready for production in the material you will use. If you have special requirements, write them in the order notes. If you also order production, you choose what to produce from the CAM Dental Technicians price list.
Which files can I upload?
Scans in STL, OBJ, PLY or STEP, up to 200 MB per file. You can add photos (JPG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC), PDFs and ZIP, RAR or 7z archives, and also the CT scan in DICOM, in a ZIP or RAR archive up to 500 MB.
What should I upload for a typical case?
The upper arch, the lower arch and the bite. When needed, add the scans with scanbodies, the photos and the CT scan.
How do I indicate the implants?
On the tooth chart you mark the elements. To join those that form bridges, press the small circle between two teeth: it's there on wide screens, while from a phone you write the connections in the notes. For each implant you click the icon above the tooth (below it, on the lower arch), search for the brand and model and, if you like, add diameter, length and connection.
Can I download STL files for implants?
Yes: on the order page, under Details, next to each implant there's the button to download its library files, to import into your design software. If your implant isn't in the list, when you search for it press “Can't find your implant? Report it”: we'll add it, and meanwhile the order goes ahead.
What is the prescription in the order?
It's the prescription for the custom-made device: you enter the prescriber with their professional register number, the patient (a code instead of the name is fine) and the clinical indication. You sign it with a simple electronic signature: the date and time are recorded and you can download it as a PDF. If you don't have the details to hand, press “Skip for now”: the work goes ahead anyway and you complete the prescription whenever you like from the order page, with “Complete it now”. In orders with production, though, it's mandatory, because the lab makes a custom-made device.
Can I save an order halfway through?
Yes, the form saves itself in your browser while you fill it in. If you leave it halfway you'll find it for two hours, from the same browser; if you've already reached the summary, it stays there until you send it.
Can I change an order I've already sent?
Yes, once, as long as the order is pending, confirmed or in progress. You can only add, and what you add is charged at price-list rates; once the order has been taken on there's also a small surcharge. You see what it costs before confirming, and the delivery date may move. An order with production can't be changed this way: write it in the order messages. You'll find the steps in the guide once you've signed in.
Can I cancel an order?
Yes: ask for it in the order's messages and our team cancels it, since there's no button. Until work has started you pay nothing; once it has started you pay part of the total, which grows with the order's status, and you find it on the end-of-month invoice. If the cancellation is down to us you pay nothing. The figures for each status are in the guide once you've signed in.
Is there a chat on each order?
Yes, every order has its own chat with the team, and you also receive the team's messages by email. There you write clarifications and requests about the case; extra photos and files you upload on the order page, under Details, with “Upload additional file”.
Can I track my order?
Yes, from your Dentra area you see in real time where it is: pending, confirmed, in progress, quality check, awaiting your review, delivered. Every step is recorded with date and time, and you'll find the history of all your orders.
How do I receive the design files?
When the work is ready you get a notification and download the files from the app, all together if you like. Delivery of the design is digital only: no shipping and no shipping costs. If you also ordered production, CAM Dental Technicians ships the finished work to you, or you pick it up at the lab.
What are clinical preferences?
They are your standards, set just once: models (base, solid or hollow, removable dies, articulator, gingiva), margins and cement space, undercuts, minimum thicknesses, pontic compression. The team sees them before every job and you don't have to repeat them in every order.
How long can I correct the patient's details?
The patient's details are in the prescription. If you skipped it, you complete it whenever you like from the order page. A signed prescription, on the other hand, can no longer be changed: if something's wrong, write it in the order messages.
Can I see the price before ordering?
Yes. The price is calculated while you fill in the order: it depends on the type of work, the number of elements or arches and the delivery date you choose. In the summary you see the total before confirming, and you can change your choices and watch it update.
Timing and revisions
Read the guideHow long does it take to receive my work?
In the price list, designs have a delivery time of 24 business hours, which is about 3 working days from order confirmation. You read the exact date in the summary before confirming, and if you need it sooner you can choose an earlier one.
What does «24 business hours» mean?
It means the design arrives in about 3 working days: we count Monday to Friday, excluding Italian public holidays, and you read the exact date in the summary before confirming. If the team asks you a question without which the work can't go on, the order stops until you answer, and the delivery date is pushed back by the time it was on hold.
Can I request a rush job?
Yes, in the order you can choose a delivery date earlier than the standard one. The earlier you go, the higher the price, up to a maximum of 30% of the total. The exact amount is always shown in the summary before you confirm.
How does the review before delivery work?
The design reaches you in 3D before final delivery. You have 24 hours to accept it or ask for a change, by drawing it on the model; the clock stops on Saturdays, Sundays and Italian public holidays, but keeps running at night. The first change on each item is free. If you don't reply within that time, the work is considered accepted. How to request a change and what happens next is in the guide once you've signed in.
Can I request a change after delivery?
Yes, until the item is invoiced, usually until the end-of-month invoice: you request it by drawing on the 3D model, as during review. If you haven't used the free change for that item yet, it's free; otherwise it's paid, and you see the price before confirming. Once the item is invoiced, changes can no longer be requested: for new work, place a new order or write to us. You'll find the steps in the guide once you've signed in.
How many changes can I request and how much do they cost?
There's no maximum, until the item is invoiced: after that, no more changes can be requested. The first change on each item is free, during review or after delivery; the others are paid and go on your end-of-month invoice. Before sending a paid one you see the price and confirm it. The details are in the guide once you've signed in.
What happens if the design has an error on our side?
We remake the file free of charge after a technical check, if you report it before the try-in or cementation. We don't refund materials, production work, transport or clinical costs. The details are in the Order Terms, in the section on design errors.
Scanners
Read the guideCan I send you scans directly from my scanner?
Yes, if you use DS Core or Shining 3D: you connect it once from the Scanner page in Dentra Core (for Shining 3D you tell us the email you use on Dental Cloud and add Dentra among your labs), and from then on the cases you send us arrive on their own among your orders, ready to complete. The connection with Medit Link is coming soon. With other scanners, export the scans as STL and upload them to the order.
Which scanners can be connected?
Today DS Core and Shining 3D. Medit Link and the others are coming soon: on the Scanner page in Dentra Core you'll find them under “Coming soon” until they're ready.
How does the scanner connection work?
You do it just once, from the Scanner page in Dentra Core: we recognise you from your scanner account, and in your scanner's software you add Dentra to your laboratories. From then on every case you send us appears among your orders as a draft to complete. You'll find the steps one by one in the guide once you've signed in.
Can I disconnect the scanner?
Yes, whenever you like, from the Scanner page in Dentra Core. The work already imported stays in your account; cases you send us afterwards no longer arrive. We only see the cases you send to Dentra, not the rest of your archive.
Prices
Read the guideHow much does design cost?
Each type of work has its own price, excluding VAT: crown/bridge €25 per tooth, Toronto bridge €110 per arch, full denture €100 per arch, partial denture €60 per arch, study model €10 per arch, model design €10 per arch, surgical guide €150 per arch, custom tray €25 per arch, occlusal splint €50 per arch, veneer €30 per tooth and MAD €100 per arch. The full price list is on the Prices page.
Are there fixed costs or subscriptions?
No. Signing up is free and with Dentra Core you only pay for orders. The only paid, optional extras are Dentra Viewer PRO and the Oralsnap plans.
Does the study model cost more if there are many implants?
Yes: it costs €10 per arch up to 2 implants and €15 above 2, counting all the implants in the job.
Is the Toronto priced per implant?
The Toronto is priced per arch: €110 per arch. Upper and lower are two arches. You see the exact total, with the implants you mark, in the summary before confirming.
Payments and invoices
Read the guideHow does invoicing work?
You receive a single invoice per month: it includes the orders delivered during the month, any paid changes, any orders cancelled after work started and any monthly plans (Dentra Viewer PRO, Oralsnap plans). The amount is collected automatically via the SEPA direct debit you authorised once. Production, if you order it, isn't on this invoice: CAM Dental Technicians invoices you for it.
What payment methods are accepted?
SEPA direct debit from your business account: you sign the mandate once and from then on the end-of-month invoice is paid automatically, with no bank transfers. We don't accept credit cards, PayPal or cash on delivery. We only use bank transfer in exceptional cases, agreed with us.
When do you ask for my IBAN?
Only when you send your first order or activate a paid plan. For orders your signature is enough: you can order even if your bank hasn't activated the direct debit yet. A paid plan, however, only starts once the direct debit is active.
How do I change my IBAN or revoke the direct debit?
Write to us at [email protected], or reply to one of our emails: we take care of it. You can't do it from your account.
The direct debit didn't go through: what should I do?
We tell you by email: nothing has been charged and the invoice is still to be paid. If your IBAN has changed, update the authorisation under Payment method and we'll collect it again; otherwise write to us at [email protected]: we check the details together and run the direct debit again. If you really can't pay by direct debit, we'll find another way together.
In which countries can I sign the SEPA direct debit?
Throughout the European Union and in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Monaco, San Marino, Andorra and Vatican City.
Who issues the invoice and how does VAT work?
Invoices are issued by Hundredjack OÜ, an Estonian company. In the European Union, if you have a VAT number, the invoice carries no VAT (reverse charge) and you account for VAT under your country's rules. If instead you signed up in the European Union without a VAT number, with your national tax number, the invoice includes Estonian VAT, as it does for clients in Estonia. Outside the European Union, for example in the United Kingdom, Switzerland or Norway, the invoice is outside the scope of EU VAT.
Who invoices me for production?
CAM Dental Technicians: the lab invoices you directly for production and shipping, not Dentra. If the same order also includes Dentra's design, that stays on Dentra's monthly invoice, as always. In the order summary you see both amounts before confirming.
Do I get a file for my accounting software?
Yes, for everyone: next to the PDF you find “EU XML”, the same invoice in the European e-invoice format, which accounting software across Europe imports automatically. If you're in Italy and have a VAT number there's also the integration file (TD17), to import into your software and send to the SDI as required for purchases from an EU supplier: only the TD17 goes to the SDI.
What do I have to do with the invoice in my country?
It depends on where you are and whether you have a VAT number: at the top of the “Invoices” page you'll find the right sentence for your case, and the full table is in the guide, under “What to do with the invoice in your country”. With a VAT number in an EU country the invoice is under the reverse charge and you declare the VAT yourself; for the specifics of your business, ask your accountant.
What language is the invoice in?
In Italian if you use Dentra in Italian, in English for all other languages.
I'm in the United Kingdom and don't have a VAT number: can I use Dentra?
Yes. In the United Kingdom your company number (Companies House) or your GDC number is enough: you only add a VAT number if you have one.
Do I need to provide an SDI code and PEC address?
No. To invoice you we only need your company name, VAT number (outside Italy, alternatively, the tax number used in your country) and address.
Where can I find my invoices?
On the “Invoices” page: on a computer you open it from the receipt icon in the systems column, above the “Settings” gear; on a phone, open “Settings” and choose “Invoices” in the menu. There you can download the PDF of each invoice, the same invoice in the European e-invoice format (“EU XML”) and, if you're in Italy and have a VAT number, the integration file (TD17).
Account and security
Read the guideCan I log in without a password?
Yes. Enter your email and you receive a link to log in, or a code to type in. You can also use a passkey (fingerprint, face or device PIN) or a password, if you prefer.
I can't sign in: what should I do?
Check your spam folder: the email comes from [email protected]. Only the latest one we sent you works: when you ask for another, the previous code stops working. If you've forgotten your password, on the Sign in page press “Sign in with password” and then “Forgot password?”. If you've lost the device with your passkey, sign in with the link and confirm with a code by email. If you get “You don't have a Dentra account yet”, there's no account with that address. For anything else write to [email protected].
How do I add a passkey?
From your account, on the Access tab, with “Add passkey”. There you can also set or change your password and, if you have any, see the apps that use your account and disconnect them. With a passkey, when you sign in with the link or the password we also ask you to confirm it's you, with the passkey or with a code by email.
How do I get notifications on WhatsApp?
From your account, under Notifications: enter your number and turn on WhatsApp notifications. By default, notifications arrive by email.
Can I communicate with the team via WhatsApp?
Yes. On Dentra's WhatsApp number the first reply comes from Dentra AI, the virtual assistant: if you need a person, it passes the conversation to our team. Conversations are recorded, so whoever replies already knows your case.
How can I contact Dentra for support?
Write to [email protected]. If your question is about an order, use the chat inside the order. In the app, at the bottom right, you'll also find Dentra AI, the virtual assistant, and “Report” for a technical problem. You can also write to us on WhatsApp.
Is it possible to have a video call with the Dentra team?
Yes. As a new customer, you book the welcome video call yourself from the “Welcome to Dentra” page, when it's offered to you. For a complex case, such as a Toronto, a full-arch on implants or anterior aesthetics, ask for it in writing: we propose a time and send you the link.
How can I leave feedback on an order?
When a design order is delivered you receive an email with a link: there you rate the work from 1 to 5 stars and can leave a comment. For production-only orders, with “I already have the design”, this email doesn't arrive.
Where is my data stored? Can I delete it?
The database is in Ireland and files are in Germany, so in the European Union. Data travels encrypted, and patients' first name, last name and date of birth get an extra layer of encryption. Some accessory services, such as sending emails, WhatsApp and some artificial intelligence features, use providers outside the EU, with GDPR safeguards: the list is in the privacy policy. To access your data, correct it, delete it or receive a copy, write to [email protected]: we reply within 30 days. You'll find the details on the Security page of the website.
How do I close my account?
There's no command in the app to close it: write to [email protected] and ask for deletion. We reply within 30 days. Invoices already issued are kept for the years required by law.
Can I change the email I sign in with?
Yes, by writing to us at [email protected] from the address you use now: we change it for you. You can't change it from your account.
Can I appoint Dentra as data processor?
Yes, under Article 28 of the GDPR: you'll find the appointment agreement on the dedicated page of the website.
Dentra Viewer
Read the guideWhat is Dentra Viewer?
It's the way to open and share dental 3D models: you upload the file and send a link. Whoever receives it opens it in the browser from any device, without installing anything.
What can I do for free with Dentra Viewer?
Without an account you open and turn models as much as you like. To share them with a link you need the free account, with your name and billing details complete: STL, OBJ, PLY and GLB files up to 50 MB, for a total of 300 MB of shared files per month, and links last 7 days.
What does Dentra Viewer PRO add and how much does it cost?
It costs €10 per month, or €100 per year. It adds files up to 250 MB and 10 GB of storage, password-protected links, an expiry of your choice (from 7 days to forever), download of the original file, and your logo with your colours.
How do I pay for PRO and how do I cancel it?
Monthly: in the first month you only pay for the remaining days, then the fee goes onto the end-of-month invoice with the SEPA direct debit. Yearly: you pay the whole year at once, on the end-of-month invoice, and when it ends it renews by itself for another year, which you pay again, until you cancel it. If you cancel the monthly plan, the current month stays paid in full and PRO remains active until the end of the month; if you cancel the yearly plan, PRO remains active until the end of the year you've already paid for.
Does the person receiving the link need to sign up?
No. They open the link in the browser, on a computer, tablet or phone, with no account and nothing to install. You see how many times it has been opened and you can revoke the link whenever you like.
Is there an app to download?
Yes, Dentra Viewer for desktop: free and with no account, for Macs (with Apple silicon or Intel) and for Windows 10 and 11. It opens files even offline and tells you when a new version is out: press «Update now» and it updates (on the Mac, sometimes the download opens and you replace it yourself). You'll find it on the Download page.
What are Dentra Viewer plugins?
They are extra tools for the Viewer, written by other developers: for example new ways to turn the model or measurements on the model. We test every plugin before publishing it. The full list is on the Plugins page of the website.
How do I turn a plugin on?
Open Dentra Viewer and put a model in the scene: «Plugins» appears. Press it, choose the one you need, read what it asks for and confirm. It is turned on for that device and you can switch it off from the same panel whenever you like.
Can a plugin see my scans?
Only if it asks and you turn it on: before turning it on you see every permission and why. On the web a plugin that uses the internet cannot read your models. In the desktop app a plugin that sends them out says so plainly, to whom and why, before you turn it on.
How much do plugins cost?
They are free for the people who use them.
Oralsnap Model
Read the guideWhat is Oralsnap Model?
It turns a scan (STL, PLY or OBJ) into a print-ready model: automatic or hand-drawn edge, base, hollowing to use less resin, and a pocket for a 25 mm NFC tag. The model comes out as STL; if the scan has colours, you can choose PLY, which keeps them.
Does my scan end up on your servers?
No, the scan you load from your computer is read and processed in your browser. It only reaches us if you decide to report a problem to us. When you work on the arches of a Dentra order, on the other hand, the scans are already in the order, and the finished model is saved there.
How do I remove the logos from the base and how much does it cost?
With the free account the model comes out with logos engraved on the base; to remove them you need an Oralsnap plan. Basic costs €14 per month (€108 per year), Pro €25 per month (€228 per year), Enterprise €45 per month (€468 per year). You activate it from the Oralsnap app or from Dentra, and in that case the fee goes onto the end-of-month invoice.
Developers
Read the guideHow do I become a developer?
You need a Dentra account. In /app open «Developer» in the account menu and request access: tell us who you are and what you want to build, and we approve it. Then, from your area, you submit Dentra Viewer plugins (each goes through its own test before it is published) and register the apps practices sign in to with «Sign in with Dentra».
Does Dentra have an API?
Yes. With Sign in with Dentra, practices sign in to your app with their Dentra account, and with GET /api/v1/me you read, with their consent, their practice details, open orders and clinical preferences, never patient data; with GET /api/v1/systems, the practice's Dentra systems. To register the app you need Developer access, and until we approve it, it only works in test mode.
Where is the developer documentation?
On the Documentation page of the website, also linked from the footer of every page, behind the «Developers» door: it has the «Sign in with Dentra» guide, to let practices into your app, and the guide to Dentra Viewer plugins. The technical parts of both guides open once you have Developer access.
Materials and technologies
What is 5-axis milling and why is it important?
5-axis milling is a CNC process where the tool moves simultaneously on 5 axes (X, Y, Z plus 2 rotational axes), allowing undercuts and complex geometries to be reached in a single operation. In dentistry, this makes it possible to mill Toronto Bridges, implant bars and structures with angles up to 30° without repositioning the workpiece. The result is superior marginal precision (±10 µm) and smoother surfaces compared to 3 or 4-axis milling.
What is the difference between 3Y, 4Y and 5Y zirconia?
The designation indicates the percentage of yttria (Y₂O₃) stabiliser in the zirconia. 3Y-TZP (3 mol%) has the highest flexural strength (~1,200 MPa) but low translucency: it's ideal for copings and posterior structures. 4Y-PSZ (4 mol%) balances strength (~800 MPa) and translucency: it's the most common compromise for monolithic posterior and anterior restorations. 5Y-PSZ (5 mol%) has maximum translucency, similar to lithium disilicate, but lower strength (~650 MPa): it's suited for aesthetic anteriors and inlays/onlays. Some multi-layer zirconias combine all three layers in a single disc to optimise aesthetics and strength.
What is the difference between dry and wet milling?
Dry milling works pre-sintered material ("green" or "white" state) without coolant: it's faster and used for zirconia, PMMA and wax. The piece is then sintered in a furnace at 1,450-1,550 °C, shrinking by 20-25%. Wet milling uses a water jet as coolant and works already-sintered or very hard materials (titanium, cobalt-chrome, glass ceramics). It's slower but doesn't require subsequent sintering. The choice between the two techniques depends on the material and the type of restoration.
What is a Toronto Bridge and how is it designed?
A Toronto Bridge is a full-arch fixed prosthesis screwed onto 4-6 implants, replacing all the teeth in an arch. Digital design starts from the intraoral scan or the master model: first the internal bar (metal or zirconia frame that screws onto the implants) is designed, then the outer structure with the teeth. Dentra designs Toronto Bridges digitally, with a custom frame, an internal bar with holes for the through screws, and teeth in PMMA or zirconia. Before production you review the design in 3D yourself.
What resins are used for dental 3D printing?
Dentistry uses photopolymer resins certified for medical use, which cure at 385 nm or 405 nm: the wavelength depends on the printer, and each resin has its own indications (models, surgical guides, temporaries, dentures). Class IIa certified resins (MDR 2017/745) can remain in the mouth for up to 2 years. In the Dentra Core order form you see the material planned for each job.
What does MDR 2017/745 compliance mean?
EU Regulation 2017/745 on Medical Devices (MDR) sets out the requirements for custom-made medical devices in the EU: traceability of materials and processes, technical documentation, declaration of conformity and post-market surveillance. In the Dentra workflow the roles are distinct: the design complies with the MDR requirements for traceability and technical documentation of the project, while the declaration of conformity is issued by whoever manufactures the device. If you or your lab produce the work, you issue it; if you order it from CAM Dental Technicians through Dentra Core, the lab issues it, as a manufacturer registered with the Italian Ministry of Health, and gives it to you together with the work: Dentra doesn't issue it.
How does ceramic layering on zirconia work?
Ceramic layering is the process of manually layering feldspathic or glass ceramic on the zirconia structure to reproduce the natural appearance of the tooth. The technician applies ceramic powders (dentin, enamel, transparent, opalescent) layer by layer, firing in a furnace at 800-950 °C after each application. Stains and colours are used for shade characterisation. Dentra designs the shape of the restoration: the shade is the one you give in the order, and the layering is done by whoever produces the work. The monolithic alternative (without layering) involves colouring and glazing directly on the milled zirconia.
What is a surgical guide and how is it produced?
A surgical guide is a device that guides the surgeon in the precise placement of implants during surgery. It is digitally designed starting from the patient's CBCT (CT scan) and intraoral scan, planning the position, angle and depth of each implant. The guide is then 3D printed with certified biocompatible resin and includes metal sleeves that guide the implant drills. This approach (guided surgery) reduces operating times, increases precision and improves the predictability of the result compared to freehand surgery.
What is the difference between fixed and removable prosthetics?
Fixed prosthetics are cemented or screwed onto natural teeth or implants and cannot be removed by the patient: they include single crowns, bridges, veneers and Toronto Bridges. They offer stability, chewing comfort and superior aesthetics. Removable prosthetics (full or partial) can be removed by the patient for hygiene: they include complete dentures and cast partial dentures with clasps or precision attachments. The choice depends on the clinical situation, the number of remaining teeth and the presence of implants. Today the trend is towards implant-supported fixed solutions even for edentulous patients.
What is immediate loading?
Immediate loading is an implant technique where the temporary prosthesis is placed on the implants within 24-48 hours of surgery, rather than waiting the traditional 3-6 months for osseointegration. This is possible thanks to implants with treated surfaces for high primary stability and temporary prostheses designed to distribute loads in a controlled way. Dentra digitally designs PMMA temporaries for immediate loading: like the other designs, the file arrives in about 3 working days from confirmation, and if you need it sooner you can choose a closer date in the order, at a higher price.
How is the precision of a dental restoration measured?
Restoration precision is measured by evaluating the marginal gap (distance between the restoration edge and the tooth preparation line) and the internal fit (adaptation of the internal surface). A clinically acceptable marginal gap is less than 120 µm according to the literature, but with 5-axis milling values of 10-50 µm are achieved. Verification is done by optical scanning of the restoration and digital superimposition with the original model. In Dentra Core you review every design yourself in 3D before delivery.
What are the advantages of a digital workflow over a traditional one?
The digital workflow (intraoral scan → CAD → CAM) eliminates silicone impressions, plaster models and wax-ups. The main advantages are: greater precision (digital scans have an accuracy of 10-20 µm vs 50-100 µm for traditional impressions), reduced times (the STL file reaches the lab in minutes), permanent digital archiving, real-time clinician-technician communication and exact reproducibility of the restoration if a remake is needed. Dentra works digitally: it receives scans and delivers files. The finished work, on request, is produced by the partner lab CAM Dental Technicians.
